It was a learning season for Mike Hochrein in 2018 as he took over for long time New Holstein cross country coach Stu Dewhurst.
Hochrein looks forward to his second team as his girls squad features four veteran runners and the boys have three.
The 2019 Husky cross country preview:

NEW HOLSTEIN CROSS COUNTRY
Head Coach: Mike Hochrein (2nd season)
2018 Record: The girls were seventh and the boys had an incomplete team at Eastern Wisconsin Conference Championships. No state qualifiers.
State Tournament History: The 1988 boys team is the only NH team to reach state competing in Class B that year. No New Holstein girls team has ever qualified for state. Individually, Joe Blanck (2008) for the boys and Amy Wildenberg (2005) for the girls are the last state qualifiers.

Looking back at 2018:
Sydney Steiner earned honorable mention All-Eastern Wisconsin Conference honors with a 19th place finish at the conference meet. The New Holstein girls had no seniors on the roster. On the boys side, Josh Dewhurst and Conner Schroeder were the lone seniors. Jarod Henschel was 46th at the EWC Meet to lead the Huskies improving his 2017 standing by six places.

A look ahead at 2019:
Depth will be the main concern, but the NH girls return five letter winners. Actually just four as Izzy Kestell is out for the season due to injury. Sydney Steiner leads that list with Sarah Schaefer, April Kienbaum and Maddy Boehnlein also back.
For the boys, Jarod Henschel, Ryan Beck and Holdyn Witk-Flaker are back with Bryce Simon a key newcomer.
Coach Hochrein is hopeful some new kids join the team as the start of school approaches. Because of their numbers, New Holstein may struggle in the team standings, but a strong middle school program gives reason for future optimism.
