My grandmother once advised me to avoid using the word “love” when talking about things—for example, “I love pizza!”

Her point: love is too precious to waste it on things that are always going to be unworthy of it. Say that you are very fond of pizza, she said, and save your love for people, especially family and friends. That’s a tall order, and I usually come up short because in addition to the aforementioned family and friends, I really do love, er, that is, I’m very fond of so many things. Of course, there are different kinds of love. I’ve heard that the ancient Greeks had six different words for love. They were pretty smart guys, so one of the six kinds would surely cover pizza, right?
