In addition to all local schools being closed today because of dangerous wind chills, many businesses, churches, and other entities are closed or have cancelled events.
If people are planning to go somewhere today they are advised to call ahead to make sure their destination is open.
Conditions are expected to be almost as brutal for most of Thursday until winds begin to diminish and temperatures start to slowly rise Thursday night. Almost unbelievably, forecasters are calling for a high around 44 F on Sunday—close to 70 degrees warmer than the coldest temperature of the last few days.
Among the cancellations for Wednesday and/or Thursday are the following:
• Zion Lutheran Church of New Holstein has cancelled its Wednesday catechism class and its Wednesday evening service.
• All four local public school districts—Chilton, Kiel, New Holstein, and Stockbridge—have called off classes and activities for Thursday as well.
• The U.S. Postal Service has announced it has suspended delivery today throughout much of the Midwest. The Tri-County News is normally delivered to the post office on Wednesday afternoon but that will occur a day later this week.
• The Manitowoc-Calumet Library System Board of Trustees meeting which was scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 6:30 p.m. has been cancelled and will be rescheduled.
• All Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicle offices are closed today. UPDATE: DMV officials announced late Wednesday that they would reopen on Thursday for normal business hours.
• In response to the ongoing winter weather and dangerously cold temperatures, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers has issued a state of emergency for Wisconsin and several counties are doing the same. This means some Wisconsin Income Maintenance Call Centers and agencies may be closed throughout the week, impacting the flow of information about BadgerCare Plus, FoodShare, Medicaid, and Wisconsin Shares benefits. Despite call centers and counties being closed, Wisconsinites can still use ACCESS to apply for benefits, report changes or view any letters, and the MyACCESS mobile app to check and manage their ongoing benefits.
• The Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac is closed Wednesday. UPDATE: The museum will re-open Thursday at 9 a.m.
• Silver Lake College of the Holy Family (Manitowoc) will be closed Wednesday, Jan. 30. Brunch and dinner will be served in the Dining Hall. Essential personnel are required for duty. Consult www.sl.edu or my.sl.edu for further details. UPDATE: The college also is closed Thursday, Jan. 31 with everything else stated above being the same.
