With the Safer at Home order being extended until May 26, Kiel VFW Post 6707 has cancelled the annual Memorial Day parade and brat fry scheduled for today. The post will be conducting their firing squad salute to veterans at area cemeteries. The schedule includes Kiel Cemetery, 7 a.m.; Hillside Cemetery, 7:05 a.m.; St. Peter and Paul Catholic Cemetery, 7:15 a.m.; Schleswig Cemetery in Rockville, 7:30 a.m.; Union Cemetery- Louis Corners, 7:45 a.m.; Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, 7:55 a.m.; Bethleham UCC Church Cemetery, 8:10 a.m.; Eaton Union Cemetery, 8:25 a.m.; and Bethel Methodist/Meggers Cemetery, 8:45 a.m. The post also will conduct a short memorial tribute to fallen comrades at Veterans Park at 9 a.m.

Wagner-Eberle-Sukowaty American Legion Post 477 of St. Nazianz and its Auxiliary Post will visit area cemeteries with members gathering first at M&K Quick Stop in St. Nazianz at 6:45 a.m. A bus will leave at 7:05 a.m. The post has set the following approximate times for ceremonies at the cemeteries: Ucker Cemetery at 7:15 a.m.; Holy Trinity at School Hill, 7:30 a.m.; Meeme Center Cemetery, 7:45 a.m.; St. Fidelis at Spring Valley, 8 a.m.; St. James United Church of Christ at Spring Valley, 8:15 a.m.; St. Isidore at Osman, 8:30 a.m.; St. Thomas the Apostle at Newton, 8:45 a.m.; Salem Ebenezer at Newton, 9:10 a.m.; St. John in Newtonburg, 9:30 a.m.; the Salvatorian Cemetery in St. Nazianz, 10:15 a.m.; and St. Gregory Cemetery in St. Nazianz at 10:45 a.m. A short ceremony will be held at each cemetery. The Legion Post maintains lists of all veterans buried at each of the cemeteries, and anyone who wishes to read them aloud at the ceremonies is welcome to do so after the firing ceremony.

The Calumet County VFW Post 3153 will be honoring fallen heroes despite the virus. The post will be firing at 17 different cemeteries between the hours of 8 and 10 a.m. Those cemeteries to have rites preformed are St. Augustine Catholic, Portland Cemetery, St. Elizabeth Catholic, German Evangelical Church Cemetery, Brothertown Union Cemetery, Morrill Family Cemetery, and Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery. Another group of veterans from the post will be going to the following cemeteries—Gravesville Union Cemetery, Hayton Hillside, St. Martin Catholic, Rantoul E.U.B Church Cemetery, Trinity Lutheran in the town of Rantoul, St, Mary Catholic in the town of Woodville, along with St. Peter Lutheran also in the town of Woodville and St. Luke Lutheran Cemetery. Both groups will meet up at Chilton Hillside/St. Mary Catholic Church Cemetery north of Chilton between 10 and 10:15 a.m. for honors after which they will travel to the Chilton Veterans Memorial located at the corner of STH 32/57 and USH 151 (Klinkner Park) and perform honors there, although there will not be any type of service. Please keep in mind if people plan to attend any of these honors they should maintain social distancing.

Sixth graders at Kiel Middle School—as part of their Team Activism unit—are holding a food drive from 2 to 5 p.m. in the back of the Middle School near the gym entrance. A drive-through, drop-off system will be used in keeping with current safe social distancing practices with the pandemic. Specific supplies which are needed are macaroni and cheese, boxed potatoes, rice/rice side dishes/Rice-A-Roni/bag rice, canned pasta (not jars), canned fruit, SpaghettiOs, and antibacterial soap. Monetary and gift card donations also will be welcome.
