A total of 71 felony counts were filed Tuesday, Feb. 4 in Manitowoc County Circuit Court against Karen S. Schwind, 51, of Fond du Lac for the alleged theft of over $65,000 from a Kiel business.
According to Manitowoc County Circuit Court documents, two of the charges are for theft in a business setting between $10,000 and $100,000, with the remaining charges all being fraudulent writing by a corporation officer. Court records state Schwind was employed by Stellar & Son LLC, a trucking company.
Kiel Police Chief Dave Funkhouser issued a press release Thursday afternoon which said in June the Police Department was contacted by a business owner in the city of Kiel who suspected that one of his employees may have stolen funds from the business during her employment.
At the Police Department’s request, the business owner had an audit done of his business’ financial records and the results of that audit were then turned over to the Police Department for further analysis and investigation.
“Upon completion of the analysis of the audit and our investigation, we determined that evidence exists to show that a former employee of the business had stolen over $65,000 from the business over the course of her employment in the years 2018 and 2019,” Funkhouser said.
The Police Department turned over the investigation to the Manitowoc County District Attorney’s office with a referral for criminal charges including over 200 felony counts related to theft by virtue of employment, forgery, uttering, and fraudulent writings.
As a result of the investigation and the referral to the District Attorney’s office, an arrest warrant was issued for the suspect.
Early Thursday morning the Police Department located the suspect in the city of Kewaunee. With assistance from the Kewaunee Police Department, Schwind was arrested and then transported by the Police Department to the Manitowoc County Jail where she is being held on charges related to the case. The court documents list Fond du Lac as Schwind’s city of residence.
“This investigation is still ongoing so at this time, no additional information will be released,” Funkhouser said.
As of Thursday afternoon an initial court appearance had not yet been scheduled for Schwind.
