Attendees at the Vacation Bible School held at St. Gregory Parish in St. Nazianz last week received a firsthand message in what it means to serve Christ by serving others.

Lia Haile of Manitowoc—who will be a sophomore this fall at Manitowoc Lincoln High School—spoke to the VBS youths about the Hopeful Hearts Club she started seven years ago.

Haile said she recalls visiting the Hope House homeless shelter in Manitowoc as a young child and meeting a boy named Joey who was going to observe a birthday in the shelter without much fanfare. With her mother Tania’s help, Lia contacted the director and told her she wanted to give Joey a birthday party complete with cake, balloons, and Thomas the Train items. She recalls how happy Joey was when he learned his birthday was being celebrated.
