To the editor:
Once again, the candidates for state and federal political offices are frantically engaged in portraying their opponent as the worst person on the face of the earth.
According to one interpretation of that tactic, it is designed to deter voters who might favor the castigated candidate from casting a vote in the election; in other words, to reduce the overall turnout for the election. From a cumulative perspective, it could be argued that turnout would be reduced even more if all candidates are described as evil creatures.
