Not many seaworthy captains can lay claim to a half century of manning their appointed stations on a sailing vessel.

Roger Laack may be the exception. He has successfully navigated the waters of Cedar Lake for the past 50 years at the helm of three different weed-cutting vessels.

Since 1969, he has captained the weed-cutting equipment for the Cedar Lake Sanitary District, carefully navigating around boats, piers and other obstacles to keep the shorelines free from excessive weed growth.
