These photos picture the beginnings of the Kiel Picnic. In 1902 Kiel’s hook and ladder company took first place and second place in the Single Man’s Climbing contest at the Third Annual Eastern Wisconsin Fireman’s Tournament.

In 1903 Kiel hosted the Fourth Annual Tournament with fire departments from Adell, Plymouth, Elkhart Lake, Chilton, Hilbert, Wayside, Brillion, New Holstein, and Kiel competing in the tournament. Over the years the tournament grew and in 1928 fire departments came from all over the state to compete in Kiel. That year a ferris wheel, merry-go-round, and other rides were part of the celebration, along with concerts by the Kiel Band, dances, and parades. Kiel continues to celebrate with the annual Kiel Picnic this weekend.
