With programs being held this fall in Kiel on the area’s German heritage—along with the popularity of seeing old photos in the Tri-County News—Steinthal area resident Mary Ann Ristow said she wanted to share a couple photos and information from that area’s past.

Steinthal was settled by German immigrants in 1854. They said the rolling hills and forests reminded them of their homeland with its rocky terrain. They named it Steinthal—“stein” meaning stone and “thal” meaning valley.
