Mike Lakin of Chilton has bicycled around the world—without ever leaving Calumet and Fond du Lac counties.

Over the past 10 years, Lakin has logged 25,000 miles on his bicycle—the equivalent of riding around the world. He reached that mark on July 24 at the age of 70, having started in October 2009 when he was 61.

Lakin had just retired from Mercury Marine in Fond du Lac and decided to take up bicycling. In mid-summer that year he bought a Schwinn 10-speed and began riding 5 to 10 miles per day, three or four days per week. He soon increased that to 15 to 20 miles per day, four to five days per week. “I think I put on 750 miles that first summer,” he said.
