Unbeaten, untied and unscored upon.
That’s the definition of the 1969 Chilton Tiger football team.

Only two other schools in Wisconsin high school football history can make such a statement – Weyauwega in 1966 and Cashton in 1980.
Last Friday more than half of that Tiger team gathered together to be recognized at halftime of Chilton’s football contest with Winnebago Lutheran Academy in honor of the 50th anniversary of that season.
Prior to the ceremony, the team received a proclamation from Chilton Mayor Rick Jaeckels and a Certificate of Appreciation from Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers.

Comments from the Tigers

Mike Schmidlkofer was a split end on that team and was the organizer of this event.
“This is a fantastic night,” he said.
“I wished a few more could have been here, like coach Nelson and our quarterback Jeff Thompson (both missed due to prior commitments), but I think we had 32 of the 39 players including Dave Casper. “
Former Chilton Citizen of the Year and 1969 assistant coach Chuck Schucknecht relived a moment.
“I knew nothing about football,” he laughed.
“In 1966, our superintendent came to me and asked if I would coach freshmen football. This would be Chilton’s first-ever freshmen team. I told him sure. I need a job. I learned very quickly.”
Dan Albedyll was also on Nelson’s staff and has been a large part of Chilton Youth Football ever since.
He says, “This brings back so many great memories. I remember the very first game. It’s a great time.”
Several players pointed out the coaching staff as well for making the defense rock solid saying that John Thome and coach Fitzpatrick schemed the zone blitz.
Following the ceremony, all team members surrounded coach Fitzpatrick and recited a favorite cheer that goes, “He’s our teacher, he’s our dream, he’s the coach of our Chilton team. Yea coach, yea coach, yea coach Fitzpatrick!!!”
The team also gave back to the Chilton football program. Schmidlkofer says they raised $2000 over the weekend to go towards an end zone camera for use by Tiger football teams. The system costs $6000.
Additional donations will be appreciated.
