READER OPINION-Ballot can be confusing in state primary
When you go to the polls on Sept. 14, you will read this paragraph on your ballot:
"If you wish to designate your party preference, completely darken the oval to the left of the party of your choice. If you designate a party preference, only votes cast for that party will be counted.

MADISON REPORT-New governor will be asked to stop dumping waste into lake
One of my biggest frustrations over the past number of years has been the inability or unwillingness of our state to stop or dramatically reduce the dumping of wastewater sewage into Lake Michigan by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD).

EDITORIAL-Another primary, another round of discontent
Do not vote for Jack Lechler in the Sept. 14 primary election.
That statement has nothing to do with, nor holds anything against Lechler, the Kiel resident who is running for State Senate as an Independent.

MADISON REPORT-Court agrees-governor guilty of robbing fund
On July 20, the Wisconsin Supreme Court announced that a $200 million raid of the Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund (IPFCF) pushed by Governor Jim Doyle and approved by a majority of state legislators was an unconstitutional taking of private property and ordered that the action must be reversed.

KIELEIDOSCOPE-Looking through the lenses of learning
Within a week, our doors will be open and students will be entering into the 2010/2011 school year. For many years, we as educators have been talking about the need to prepare our students for the 21st century.

READER OPINION-Wisconsin not immune from illegal alien problem
The events of last week should serve as a wakeup call.
We in Wisconsin are not immune from the problems that are impacting states like Arizona, Texas and California. We read, see and hear stories about parks in Arizona with warning signs advising Arizona and U.S. citizens not to enter because the parks are dangerous.

KIELEIDOSCOPE-The many lenses of learning
This past week I had the pleasure of attending my first Kiel Picnic. It was obvious that the community has much pride in this event. Several businesses, organizations, clubs and individuals worked together to bring this experience to the families of Kiel and the surrounding communities.

READER OPINION-Did he hear that right
I needed to turn the volume up on the radio last week because I didn't think I was hearing correctly.

KIELIEDOSCOPE-The many lenses of learning
My name is Louise Blankenheim and I am the new District Administrator for the Kiel Area School District. I moved to the community in June and joined the Kiel School District in Jul

READER OPINION-We are borrowing from kids, grandkids
How much more debt are we as Americans willing to pile on our kids and grand kids future before we say enough is enough to our liberal politicians?

THROUGH THE VIEWFINDER-A great year for harvesting clippings
My calendar shows that it's nearly August.
That's about the time the lawn mowing equipment gets put away temporarily for the annual summer lawn dormancy.
Not this year.

BEHIND THE FRONT PAGE-Vacationing with 25,000 Teenagers? Sounds strange, but it was awesome.
I hope at least a few of you missed seeing this column in last week's Tri-County News.
I took some rare time away from the office; in fact, that was only the second week in the now over nine years of the Tri-County News that I have not been around on a publication Tuesday.

EDITORIAL-State Continues to live well beyond its means
The State of Wisconsin is continuing to live well beyond its means, according to Sen. Joe Leibham.

READER OPINION-Independent would like to be part of any forum
To the editor:
I found this recent article in the Sheboygan Press to be interesting (a condensed version was on page 12 of last week's Tri-County News).
I would like to share it with you (if you did not see it) and make some comments, observations and suggestions about it:

EDITORIAL-Loud about jobless symptoms, instead of roots
As unemployment benefits for millions of Americans were set to run out this week, President Barack Obama engaged in all-too-familiar tactics.

BEHIND THE FRONT PAGE-It's quiet on the highway these days
The talk of the town-and beyond-this week is how to get around town.
The only highway through New Holstein is shut down for the next seven weeks-well, 6-1/2 now, we hope-and everyone is talking about it.

GUEST OPINION-States should abolish tax collections from cigarettes
Faced with yawning budget deficits, state legislators are looking for new revenue sources.
Many think hiking cigarette excise taxes is the pain-free answer, but they're wrong.

GUEST OPINION-Law officials seek help in thwarting area thieves
In recent weeks, all of our communities have experienced incidents of thefts of property.
Thursday, July 01, 2010
MADISON REPORT-State to build interchange on STH 23 near St. Cloud
For this week's column focus, I am pleased to return to the "Just Ask Joe" format in which I address specific questions from local constituents regarding state government issues or programs.

SCHOOL CROSSINGS-Thanks for the memories
I would like to thank all of you for the opportunity to serve this district. I will be leaving in a few days to retire once again. I would like to write about some of the many wonderful experiences the school district and community have given me.

BEHIND THE FRONT PAGE-The commencement speech you will never hear
I covered New Holstein High School's commencement on Sunday afternoon.
I probably have not missed more than three or four NHHS commencements over the past 26 years.
