Tammy Freis of Kiel said she thought someone was pulling her leg when she received a phone call last week saying she was being put on a conference call with Piggly Wiggly and 7UP officials.
When the callers said she was the winner of a Smart car, Freis said she asked, "Who is this? You're kidding me!"

If you go to the 2010 Calumet County Fair and take in the amusement rides, the musical entertainment at the pavilion and special events at the grandstand, you will have consumed only part of fair.

City eyes firehouse expansion
Proposed $1.7 million project would address fire, EMS needs.
Plans to upgrade the Kiel firehouse at a proposed cost of $1.7 million will be discussed at the Sept. 14 meeting of the Kiel City Council. At tonight's Council meeting, a proposal to fund $176,000 in design and engineering fees was tabled, giving the Council time to unveil its plans for the firehouse additions and seek public input.

Old drug disposal planned in City of Kiel
Disposal of unwanted drugs is scheduled to take place Thursday, Sept. 2 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Kiel Community Center, 510 3rd St., Kiel.
Acceptable items are prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, veterinary medications, controlled substances and illegal drugs.

Power outage affects all of Kiel
A Wednesday afternoon construction mishap caused a power outage for the entire Kiel community. Early reports from Kiel City Hall indicate that excavation in the Kieland Meadows Subdivision was responsible for the outage. Apparently, a main line serving the community was severed in the process. St. John St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church of Cleveland will be celebrating its 150th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Kiel Cooperative Preschool's annual "Open House and Greet the Teachers" event is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 30 from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the preschool.

Kiel police looking for dog owner
The Kiel Police Department is looking for information from a dog bite complaint. The victim was bitten on Sunday afternoon August 15 around 2:30 p.m. in front of 20 East Fremont. The KPD needs to confirm that the dog involved has had its rabies shots.

KMB continues to move toward uniform goal
The Kiel Municipal Band has reached another milestone in its effort to reach a goal of $50,000 to purchase 100 new marching uniforms for Kiel's musical ambassadors.
Each of the uniforms will cost $500 and the band hopes to reach its goal by December 2011.

Wilke Lake residents discuss road
Landowners whose properties are served by a 1, 250 foot private road (an extension of Henning Road at Wilke Lake) will meet at the Schleswig Town Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 23 to work out a solution to safety issues related to the private road, a matter that in March was brought before the Schleswig Town Board in the form of a petition.

Picnic begins Thursday in park
The 77th 2010 Kiel Community Picnic and Kiel Parade takes place this week - starting Thursday evening.
The first Kiel picnic was held 118 years ago in 1892.
The picnic, like the community, has grown since. At the onset, the picnic was a one-day event sponsored by the firefighters.

Willard J. Daun, 81, of St. Cloud has been identified as the man who was killed Thursday morning when his moped crossed over the centerline into the path of an oncoming vehicle near St. Anna.

Tavern license, grant OK'd by Kiel Council
Dustin Heinen was awarded a Class B beer and liquor license by the Kiel City Council July 27 for his proposed new Fremont Street establishment.
Heinen will be opening a tavern at 710 Fremont Street, the former location of the Cruz Inn.

Kiel Picnic slated next week
The 77th 2010 Kiel Community Picnic and Kiel Parade is only two weekends away - Aug. 12-15.
As in recent years, the event is run by the Kiel Optimist Club and the Kiel Lions Club. With the exception of the parade, all events take place in Kiel City Park.
