The night did not start good for the New Holstein boys basketball team.
Leading scorer Nolan Beirne picked up two quick fouls, the only two called on the Huskies in the opening 18 minutes, and Beirne found himself relegated to the bench until the second half.

But like a championship team they are, the Huskies found someone to take over. It was Ryan Steffes.
The Junior guard pumped in 23 points that included five three-pointers and New Holstein turned a 29-24 halftime deficit into a 66-59 win over fifth-seeded Wrightstown in a WIAA Division 3 Regional Championship game before a near packed NHHS gym.
Beirne returned to the floor for the second half and finally got into the scorebook with a lay in four minutes in as the Huskies rallied.
Another key performer was reserve guard Brad Schroeder who went 6-6 at the free throw line down the stretch.
The top seeded Huskies advance to sectional play this coming Thursday night when they face second seed Valders at 7 p.m. at the Menasha High School Fieldhouse.
The two Eastern Wisconsin Conference teams split their two regular season meetings with the Huskies winning at Valders and the Vikings returning the favor two weeks ago on the Huskies home floor.
Thursday’s winner advances to the sectional championship on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Kaukauna. Appleton Xavier is the top seed in the other half of the sectional.
