UPDATE- 5:25 pm- For the second consecutive season, BVC has a diver who has medaled with a top 6 finish. Chilton sophomore Jose Martinez held on for the sixth and final spot on the awards podium at the WIAA Division 2 State Diving Championships at the University of Wisconsin Natatorium in Madison. Martinez took 12th as a freshman last February when teammate Cody Hayes placed fifth. Martinez finished with 328.80 points, just ahead of seventh place Alex Rayfield of Cudahy who totaled 327.55
4:20 pm Jose Martinez is on the verge of a state medal in diving. Through eight dives, three to go, Martinez has moved up two places to fifth with 235.50 points. The top six get medals. He is 4.7 points ahead of sixth place and 5.6 ahead of 7th place. He is about 13 points behind 4th place. Next up date at 5:10 pm.
3:45 pm We have completed five of 11 dives and Martinez is currently in 7th place. He needs to make up 4-1/2 points in these last six dives. Next up date will be around 4:10 pm. That will be dives six through 8 (semifinal round).
Competing for BVC will be Jose Martinez (Chilton), Eli Riesterer (Valders), Isaac Koehler (Chilton), Bo Geiger (Brillion) and Parker Sonnabend (Brillion). Sonnabend is the son of former Chilton athletic director Dave Sonnabend.
Martinez is up first for this afternoon’s diving competition at the UW Natatorium in Madison. He is making his second trip to state. He placed 12th a year ago and aims at a top 6 finish and a spot on the awards podium. Last year, Chilton diver Cody Hayes placed fifth in diving.
We will have updates following the preliminary round (first 5 dives) at about 3:20 pm, the semifinal round (dives 6 through 8) at about 4 pm, and final dive results about 4:45.
