To the editor,
For months now an urge has been welling up in me to write to you and the city of Kiel about someone very special to me and to you.
This person has given many years of service to the people of Kiel, approximately 30-plus years and, of course, she has also helped me too in so many ways.
She retired a little over one year ago.
Now I just retired, and I realize there is one more thing I need to do for Kiel (as your ex-public health nurse) and this very special person. Looking back over my much shorter career but wonderful assignment in Kiel, I realized just how much she guided, encouraged, challenged, and mentored me through the years. Sometimes she could be a little tough on the outside, but it didn’t take me long to realize just what a huge heart she had. She would often encourage me to put myself into an older person’s shoes, and to see life from their point of view. She would often tell me to have compassion for the elderly, as some day, if we were lucky, we are all going to become one. She would often remind me to ask, how would I like to be treated, and then go out and do it.
